32-year-old still hoping to get once-coveted Roots sweatpants for Christmas

Fredericton — Local 30-something Amber Lowell said if she’s being honest with herself, all she wants for Christmas is a pair of those comfy Roots sweatpants with the beaver logo on the top of the left thigh that most teens wore in middle and high school back in the late ’90s and early aughts.

“I also wouldn’t mind finally having that crew-neck Club Monaco sweatshirt that was so cool back in the day. And I’m still holding out hope of getting a nice new pair of Umbro sneakers or Edwin jeans, but I’d probably settle for just the sweats.”

Lowell said she asked for the Roots sweatpants for Christmas for five consecutive years beginning in 1998, but their hefty price tag always deterred her more practical-minded parents.

“I didn’t need them, true, but now that I’m in my 30s I feel like I can finally justify all those status-symbol trends of my youth. And my parents are retired now. Surely they put some money away to help me pay for this stuff.”

Lowell says her fiancé, Andrew Peterson, already owns most of the items that she still hopes to receive.

“He has the Roots sweats — probably because his parents actually loved him — and he totally takes them for granted, too. They just sit in the drawer like they’re from Walmart or something.”

Lowell said she’s been dropping hints to her parents — who are in their 60s — about the boot-cut American Eagle jeans she wouldn’t mind having for weekends chilling with her friends, listening to Big Shiny Tunes 2, which features “Song 2” by Blur, “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind, and “The Beautiful People” by Marilyn Manson, among other hits that have truly never gone out of style.

Additional items on her Christmas 2018 wishlist include: A GAP hoodie, a Paul Frank tee, Guess sunglasses, an LL Bean backpack with her name monogrammed on it, and a Juicy Couture velvet sweatsuit for when she feels like being a bit trashy.
