Montreal — Starting Nov. 13, Air Canada will begin operating a daily direct flight from Saint John to St. John’s to accommodate those who accidentally flew to New Brunswick when trying to get to Newfoundland.
“We’re thrilled to be offering this valuable service to Canadians and world travellers alike,” said Alexandria Harkness, a spokesperson for Air Canada. “Taking advantage of this niche yet lucrative demographic will help propel our business to new heights.”
According to the airline, the new flight path will be targeted specifically to those attempting to interview for Medical School at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Tourism New Brunswick and Discover Saint John expect to see a 41 per cent decrease in tourism as a result of this new service. “Although we are disappointed at the diminished tourism revenue, we completely understand Air Canada’s reasoning and tourists’ desperation to leave New Brunswick. We wish them the best in their travels,” tweeted Tourism New Brunswick this morning.
Flights will not be initially offered in the opposite direction, as the number of people who actually want to be in Saint John are slim to none. To prepare for the influx in passengers, the Saint John Airport will be adding 15 seats to their departures area, but will be taking out the Java Moose to cover the costs.
Seats will start at $894 plus additional taxes and fees. Air Canada will not serve complimentary beverages, although Screech can be purchase on board for $149.
