Man ill from three-shot challenge: ‘At least I didn’t have to give to charity!’

St. John’s — Todd Russey of St. John’s, N.L. became violently ill with alcohol poisoning but told reporters that he is “just relieved” he narrowly missed having to give $100 to a charity of his choice. The man had participated in the three-shot challenge.

The latest in social media challenges to circulate on Facebook, this one encourages individuals to film themselves doing three shots of hard liquor consecutively, then to nominate three others to do the same. If you don’t complete the challenge within 24 hours, you have to pay $100 to a charity of your choice.

“To be honest, I was pretty excited when I heard about the three-shot challenge. I love drinking to the point of puking,” stated Russey with his head in the toilet. “But then when I heard I would have to donate $100 to a charity if I didn’t do it, well, that just sweetened the deal. I’m basically saving $100 and getting shit-faced to boot!”

Sarah Meyers of Halifax, N.S., whom Russey nominated in the challenge, was also very relieved to not have to donate to charities which are are all suffering financially as a result of the pandemic. She spoke to us from the hospital where she was getting her stomach pumped.

“Look, I’m not a heavy drinker; I only drink a few bevvies a night. I kind of wasn’t sure if I’d even do the challenge when I got nominated. But when I found out it would keep me from having to give to a non-profit that really needs the money right now, well I went all in. I actually did 12 shots, which, if you think about it, saved me from giving away $400 to environmental organizations, homeless shelters, scientific research, and just general needy people. I just feel so relieved to have saved so much money.”

Meyers nominated her wealthy friend Sam Mitchell who lives in Rothesay, N.B., who did nine shots.

“I basically did the challenge three times in a row drinking very old, rare and expensive whiskeys, as I wanted to make my #threeshotchallenge video go viral,” stated Mitchell as he recovered the next day on his couch.

“The shots alone were probably worth $200 each. So in total, counting the cost of the fine whiskeys, I’d say I kept about $2,100 out of the hands of disadvantaged and impoverished people. I might have the world’s worst case of gut rot — total juice deuce if you know what I mean — but at least no one else is benefiting from my hard-earned money!”

To date, the only non-profit claiming to have benefited from the three-shot challenge has been Al-Anon.
