Maritimers ‘most likely to steal garbage bags from work,’ StatsCan report finds

Ottawa — According to a study conducted by Statistics Canada and co-sponsored by Glad Canada, people from New Brunswick, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are more likely than other Canadians, by a staggering margin, to steal garbage bags from their places of work.

Two hundred people in each province were given a short telephone survey to address the worsening issue of high office overhead and low garbage bag sales.

chartOne male aged 40 to 55 in Oxford, N.S. agreed to be quoted as to the extent of his employee theft: “I make $10.70 an hour, no overtime, no benefits, but I do get free garbage bags, paper towel, paper towel dispensers, toilet paper, toilet paper dispensers, pens — If you need a pen, I’m your guy — computer paper, some computers and the odd K-Cup from the lunch room.”

The survey also found that Maritimers were the least satisfied with their brand choice of garbage bags. A female between the ages of 19 to 25 in Paradise, N.L. complained: “I don’t know what brand my garbage bags are, all I know is you can’t tell which end is the open end sometimes… the ‘free brand’ sucks.”
