PEI experimenting with potato-based dairy alternative

Charlottetownn — The Government of Prince Edward Island, always looking to increase revenue, is planning something for this tourist season that’s sure to honour P.E.I.’s unique culture. Instead of plugging Anne of Green Gables for the 151st time, the government has a team of experts working on a non-dairy milk alternative made of potato matter.

The yet-to-be-named product will first be rolled out in Superstores around Islander Day 2018.

“We’re really excited to get this stuff onto shelves and into freezers!” said provincial Agriculture spokesperson Rebecca Lewis. “The dairy alternative will be available in liquid and frozen states, with so many fun tastes to choose from. We’ll offer a variety of classic Island flavours like ‘fries with the works’ (peas and no peas), ‘lobster and butter’ and ‘raspberry cordial.’ And of course we’ll be creating more mainstream flavours as well, like chocolate and strawberry, to appeal to the less adventurous among us.”

The Agriculture department is partnering with the Amalgamated Dairies Limited to ensure proper pasteurization, packaging, and distribution of this terrific Island treat. When it hits the shelves it’s expected to be priced between $2.50 and $5 per litre, which, although slightly more expensive than traditional milk, will be healthier and tastier — well worth the cost.

“We just know it will be a hit with the locals,” continued Lewis, “but we REALLY want it to be an exciting part of the tourist’s experience. Our only regret is that for the first run we will have to use ‘come from away’ potatoes because all of 2017’s crop is slated to become french fries.”

She paused, taking a long sip of a trial batch of “lobster and butter” potato-milk. “Yum!”
