Trudeau gov’t announces additional 10 cents per litre carbon tax due to extra fuel burned by freedom convoy

Ottawa — As the Freedom Convoy nears Ottawa, police and politicians are wondering what this weekend will bring. Will the protest be peaceful or will agitators join them and create violence?

Regardless, a whole bunch of diesel fuel was used this week, and that’s caused something surprising. It’s triggered a little-known clause in the carbon tax law that states if consumption goes up, so does the carbon tax.

As a result, when truckers reach Ottawa, they’ll face an additional 10 cent tax per litre when they fill up to go home. The fuel increase only affects diesel and will go into effect tomorrow morning as the Freedom Rally ramps up.

“This was as much a surprise to us as anyone else,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

“Honestly, I totally forgot about that part of the legislation. Goes to show you that we respect individuals’ rights to peaceful protest, but sometimes that’s gonna cost ya!” he quipped.

However, long-haul trucker Tim White is outraged. “That weasel knew that clause was there and never told anyone! Thankfully I gave the whole thing a read before leaving home in Calgary. That’s why my buddies and me are hauling giant tanks of gas with us for this protest. We’re going to park right at the front so everyone can fill up at their leisure. I guess it’s kinda dangerous but heck, I’m not paying those outrageous prices at the pump!”

Trudeau explained with enthusiasm that the additional funds gained from this initiative will not only go toward reducing carbon emissions, but also to furthering vaccine distribution and education across the country.

“I heartily encourage as many truckers as can spare the time and money this weekend to take part in the convoy,” he told reporters. “Together, we can slow climate change and help everyone in this country become vaccinated against COVID-19. Honk if you agree!”
