Borden-Carleton — Strait Crossing Development Inc. and the Government of Prince Edward Island are announcing a joint project to cover over six kilometres of Confederation Bridge. This initiative was spearheaded by a petition that circulated the Island community of Borden-Carleton in 2016, when the town lost revenue due to the bridge closing either in part or wholly for storms.
The resident who began the petition, Marcie Andrews, didn’t think it would get this far, but she’s glad to see that progress is being made.
“I was talking to some of the other shop owners in Gateway Village,” she said, “and they agreed it was hard on us when the bridge is closed in a storm. Nancy suggested covering it…one thing lead to another, and now I guess the project is greenlit.”
The Manatee reached out to Strait Crossing and the Transport minister of PEI and received this response signed by both parties: “We are excited to partner in this endeavour to make the Island more accessible to the citizens of Canada. We are also pleased that, upon completion, the town of Borden-Carleton will have increased access to revenue that would normally be depressed on storm days…”
The cost of the project is estimated to be approximately $4 million per kilometre, take five years to complete, and there is no word on connecting the roof from the New Brunswick end. A spokesperson for the Government of New Brunswick called the project “absurd” and rejected the notion saying, “it would diminish the reputation of other fine covered bridges in New Brunswick.”
Strait Crossing is confident that the impact on tolls will be minimal. “We’ll probably only have to raise [tolls] by 33 per cent to cover the cost,” said a representative, “but it’ll be worth it in the end!”
The project is anticipated to begin in 2019.
We can barely afford to cross the bridge now at $46.50 per trip. Increase that by 33% and we’ll never be able to go. Thanks a lot PEI for nothing.

BOTH SIDES NEED TO ADMIT THAT THE BRIDGE WAS A MISTAKE. PERIOD!! NOW IT WILL BE WORSE. ALL THEY NEEDED TO DO WAS GET A COUPLE OF NICE FERRIES. MANY PEOPLE MISS THE ABEGWEIT!! PERSONALLY I AM AFRAID TO DRIVE ACROSS THIS BRIDGE. GOD BLESS!

If this is the case, and the toll goes up why isn’t the cost directed to the business that it effects. why would everyone be burden , its going to be added to the consumer anyway because the business are now paying more to get it here .why pay TWICE .its not necessary for cars to be charged, their not transporting good to business. For one thing in my opinion anyone that is a resident of PEI with a license of PEI Traveling back and forth from here to the mainland shouldn’t be paying full price for the bridge or boat because they live here and have to come home., its getting so pathetic .what i really find pathetic is the cost of milk over here. 7.27 /4 litre. Big signs showing so proud 7.27 with 3 big suppliers of mike over here, when you can go to Halifax and get the same thing for 5.25.
