City of Fredericton poised to ban singing while driving

Fredericton — The City of Fredericton intends to pass a bylaw banning singing in your car while driving. This new regulation has been spurred by the countless near-collisions caused by people belting songs too vigorously while the road conditions worsen. City police say they have had outstanding results with a decline in collisions after passing the cellphone ban back in mid-2011.

“This just seemed like the next logical step in saving citizens from themselves,” said Const. Harry Gunter this morning. “Many people have a difficult time concentrating on the road while also trying to remember the words to catchy new tunes like ‘All About That Bass’,” he explained.

singingAn anonymous Frederictonian in favour of the bylaw exclaimed that singing while driving is “the equivalent of chugging 6 beers while behind the wheel.”

The new bylaw will be up for debate in January to get a feel for public approval before it’s implemented. City officials plan to train officers to use a field “ability” test on people pulled over for the offence. Drivers subjected will need to accurately recite the lyrics of the song they were caught singing in order to gauge their singing-while-driving competency. Fines will start at the standard $172.50 if the driver can successfully recite the lyrics, and will be doubled if the driver fails or if their voice is displeasing to the officer. The officers are being trained by local high school music teachers on tonation, pitch, vibrato and other important performance areas.

City Police want to remind citizens to think twice before irresponsibly belting “Jingle Bells” along with the radio on their morning commute. The proposed bylaw is just one more measure the city and police are taking to ensure the safety of its drivers and passengers.

  2. I’d say that there should be a ban on having animals roaming free in a vehicle too while driving.

  3. Dumbass people stop banning things, its a slippery slope. What kind of free society do we live in? Obviously we don’t. We live in a police society where they make money off petty little things like singing in your car.

  4. When are they going to ban driving in Fredericton and return to the good ‘ol horse and buggy? Sure it may take a little longer to get up the hill from downtown but the return trip will be so much fun. Just like in the Disney movies, your Equine friend will be in the seat beside you as bound along and end up on the front lawn of the PC Party house. Don’t forget to hit the NB Liquor store a couple blocks away to make a real party.
