Fredericton — Earlier this week Tim Hortons, the staple Canadian coffee chain, announced they would be increasing the price of their hot beverages ordered through the drive-thru to include a mandatory tip, which staff have been keeping anyway.

The decision was made largely due to the massive number of complaints about drive-thru employees assuming any change from an order would be given to them, and the increase is also intended to help Tims employees recover from the debt owed to the store from substantial overspending on Timmies gift cards as presents.

“Sometimes people sit at the window expecting their change back, which obviously is super annoying and incredibly rude,” said high-schooler Abby Johnson, a part-time weekend employee at the Regent Street Tim Hortons.

“We put in like five or seven hours a weekend here with one of our arms being cold the whole time…we deserve the 80 cents when someone orders a large.”

Ryan Wooler, a fellow drive-thru employee working at different Fredericton-area franchise, shares the feeling of entitlement with Johnson.

“We are expected to stand there for a couple hours at a time and work…no one should be expected to suffer through that type of physical labour and not get tipped for it. Can you imagine the impact this will have on my body by the time I’m 30? We deserve to be compensated extra!”

The Manatee reached out to a local franchise owner, who prefers to remain anonymous, for comment on why only hot beverages will invoke the mandatory tip rule.

“We tend to only see coffee or latte orders in the drive-thru, where we stick the annoying little shits. The increase really is to cover the overtime of them calling in sick, tired, or Fortnite.”

Customers will see the increase take effect on Monday.

  1. The audacity to demand something that is not yours to begin with is absolutely selfish, self entitled, born out of ignorance of the laws which govern us. Instead of stealing from your loyal customers which keep you employed, demand from your employer for a pay increase.

  2. *Reads article, laughs ass off*

“Don’t read the comments, don’t do it, just don’t do it”

*Reads comments and soul dies a little beaucsr Canadian comedy must truly be dead and nothing is good in the world anymore*

Don’t worry Notaboars. I feel your pain. We aren’t all that moronic in internet-land.

  3. If you can get my order right then maybe there will be a tip involved. But every time i go in for a tea with 2 honeys and dome lid and i dont get the dome lid or my tea is not stirred and honey is all on bottom of cup no tip.

      1. You’re not serious are you? Do you tip poor service, getting an incomplete order and substandard product? If working conditions are so terrible then Tim Hortons needs to pay their workers more.

  4. I leave a comment here, because I feel that “Notaboars” shoukd know at least one other person on the internet realised this was fake/satire.. ahah, keep up the good work educating these ignorant compulsive commenters!

  5. I dont see labourers bitching and complaining about tips when shoveling a driveway during winter… Everyone gets exposed to the same conditions during winter just because your getting paid to make people coffee doesnt entitle you to anything.. Its just the enviroment you live in dont blame your employer or his customers

    1. well you millennial when people are outside doing your driveway through wearing coats hats they can prepare for the element when you’re in the Drive-Thru window you get a shity f****** coat and that’s it.so before you start bitching what other people wanted to get off your ass get off your phone take the job yourself work in their shoes and then come back and get an opinion because until then you’re just some f****** dumbass customer who b****** about everything because you don’t get it you’re f****** way because you think the world revolves around you .

  6. What did we create? This generation thinks they deserve life on a silver platter. An expected tip? Another reason to avoid Timmie’s!

    1. It’s a JOKE! Not a real article. On a side note, the government gets “expected tips” all the time… but call them TAXES. Or vehicle registrations. Or renewable licenses. Or the USED VEHICLES Sales Tax ( on a vehicle that was already fully taxed by the original owner when they bought it )

  7. I worked at a building center when I was young. We stood all day, wore winter parkas at cash and nobody gave us a freaking tip. Heres a tip. Stay in school you entitled little assholes.

    1. It’s a fucking joke….read the article. Maybe if you stayed in school you would understand reading comprehension. Jesus everyone lost their sense of haha now. Everyone gets offended with every headline

  8. Is this some kind of joke? Is this really what young adults think working at a fast food joint you think you deserve a tip for handing me a coffie threw the window man that must be so tough lol. What a joke do somthing to deserve the tip dont just expect it.

  9. Why should employees suffer due to sales of gift cards?
Also, it’s your JOB to look after the customer!!! It’s the job of the employer to pay you! If you don’t like the working conditions, find another job! As your customer I will decide to tip or not on how well you do your job!! Don’t assume the change is yours!!! Maybe I should use debit or gift card to pay, eliminates changebissue!

  10. If I have to wait 20 minutes for a coffee going through the drive-thru why should I have to tip if I get good service and then I’ll tip on my own I don’t need you adding it on to my price already I will not be coming back if this ever happens to me

  11. Hmmmm a tip you applied for the job, you knew you be serving coffee etc, and yet your whining because your hand and arm is outside the window in the winter I am sorry were you dropped as a child your not entitled children you get paid for doing a job just like the rest of us get over your self .. You applied there because you thought it would be easy and then life slapped you in the face and said wake up.. Get people orders right then we might tip you…

  12. Fuck timmies and any piece of shit who works there and thinks they decide what i do with my money.
Its your job you useless fucks, maybe be something to the world worth more and you will earn more.

    1. You listen here i am a 60 yr old women and i work there..i dont expect anything from my customers except politeness..u dont wanna tip dont but being rude and ignorant..not good..we work just like anyone else..yes it is hard on us yes its a hard job..so we are not useless fucks..and it is a hard job trying to be polite to rude people but we do it..so maybe think before you speak

    2. F* Cory! He’s a useless P.o.S. that doesn’t recognize The Manatee as being a site that makes up FAKE NEWS stories as SATIRICAL JOKES! This isn’t even close to a real story and anyone with barely half a brain cell would realize that no reputable reporter would quote a manager calling his staff “little shits” or give credit to a silly game like Fortnite as being a major source for students calling in sick for a shift…

    3. Gear down turbo. No doubt you’ll still roll your lazy ft a$$ in there Monday for your usual triple triple and three double glazed donuts

  13. Enough is enough! “Standing there for hours getting one arm cold”! What about tipping secretaries, they sit for hours risking back problems and hemmeroids. Let’s stop and tip officers directing traffic cause they risk getting hit by cars. How about tipping gas station attendants cause they risk getting robbed…these people chose to work in their respective lines of work, they need to deal with it. As canadians we over pay for stuff enough as it is. And now we have to pay more cause the owners of these establishments pay their employees as little as they have to so that they can “maintain their life style and profitability. What a f@$king joke!

    1. Excellent point!! I work in healthcare, on my feet up to 12 hrs a day sometimes more!!! I do not get a tip on my pay check, my tip is a thank you from a family member or a patient, do your job and stop whining!!! Life doesn’t owe you anything, be grateful you have a job!!!

    1. It looks like Tim’s can’t get any body to do this job they sTICk there worst employes there and now want us to pay extra so they will stay
      FIX THE JOB TIM HORTON
Never a problem at mcdes better Coffey to

  14. I’m not sure what the wage laws are in Fredericton, but here in Ontario, those who make tips get paid a servers wage, less than a regular minimum wage. Why would I tip someone when they are not bringing me an extra service like a server would? These kids are just too entitled these days. I tip based on service received and quality of the product I am buying. Timmies quality is way down over the years and going through the drive thru means I don’t want much interaction, I have places to be. If you want more money, stay in school and maybe don’t work at Tim Hortons into your 30’s.

  15. While I don’t agree with the mandatory tipping and don’t get the issue with the gift cards, I have to say I have had some great servers at Tim’s. At least they are not bumming money on a street corner and most of them are really good kids trying to make a living. It is not fair to lump everyone in the same bag and I am pretty sure these kids take a lot of crap from customers who have their own sense of entitlement! Most of us would not want the job!

  16. The Abby Johnson sounds like a lazy twat nugget. “It’s extremely rude” to get my money back you lazy fuck? Poor baby boy Ryan wooler worried this is too hard or work wondering what it will do to his body at 30? Little bitch won’t make in the real world. Man I hope I die young so useless cunts don’t have to take care of me.

    1. What an idiot. Learn to READ before you comment! This is a SATIRE website. Therefore, the article is a JOKE. Learn to take one before lashing out at non-existant people and realize that the REAL employees at Tim Horton’s are still people… just like you!

  17. Are these people stupid, “people sit in the drive thru expecting their change”. This statement annoys me so much, i work at timmies i dont expect tips, this is our job we got paid $14 per hour to do make coffee, if you want tips work as a server or a starbucks barista. People now a days thinks that their entitled to this kind of things with a little effort especially high school students that do part time.

  18. What about the poor ppl picking the coffee at a slave lavour rate. They would be overjoyed with even one hour of timmy wage. What about the dairy farmer who is up at 430 in the morning working the farm in the heat and cold so there is cream milk butter yogurt… maybe they should ask for a cut of that tip. What about all the work that goes into everyhing that makes it possible for timmy workers to have a job. Gimme a break. If you are suffering at your job then quit. Maybe become a proctologist since you already have a great knowledge of assholes.

    1. What able people that write satirical articles like this one? What about people who comment without understanding that?

  19. That is not how tipping works Abby and Ryan. I work at McDonald’s, 40 hours when I started, now 20+ and I may have to stick my arm out the window my entire shift and you don’t see me or any of my coworkers doing the same, holding the change as a tip. Tim Horton’s and McDonald’s are minimum wage jobs. You don’t work in a restaurant where they are paid below minimum wage. Give the people their change. And no more Timmie’s coffee for me thank you.

  20. As if…. Ha ha ha this is funny… As I work at a Tim Hortons, handing out coffee through a drive thru window at 5am when it’s -30 (with wind chill) and the inside window is white from frost $.10 or $.80 will not make a difference.
But do keep in mind if your window is frozen on your car, come in…. It’s much easier on everyone… Also if your cold with your window down, we are freezing doing that 75x’s an hour…. Don’t use debit, have your money ready! Nothing like getting frost bite while waiting for someones debit to approve.

  21. I am someone who has a Tim Hortons coffee two or three times a day. I never understood why the employees there expect a tip for doing their job. I work 8.5 hours, five days straight. I don’t go through extreme physical labor like a lot of people but I am a labourer. I started off as part time at a grocery store. Worked pretty much every department there during the day. I received a lot of hours for being a dependable and hard worker. If someone calls in sick, I’m the one they call. At the store, accidents happen. When the do, I don’t say to the customers ” Ishould get a time for cleaning up your mess”. I had to collect buggies from outside in the freezing cold winters to the scorching hot summers, just so the customers hand nice and easy access to what they need, I never once thought I should get a tip…this is my job. A year and three months later, I received a shot at full time over nights at a different location and got it. Now I’ve been there for a year and a month as lead hand/supervisor stocking all the isles and facing them forward to make it nice and full for the customers. Never once did I think that “I should get some kind of tip for this”….know why…this is my job and I’m getting paid already to do my job.

  22. No way that kid said physical labour hahahahahaha I worked at a production factory doing REAL labour, as a student for 12$/hr, and because of that experience I could get better jobs. Tips are meant for high school employees, not for middle aged people to be dependant on and to expect people not to want their money back. Tim Hortons amazes me with how stupid they get each year. Lost a life log costumer if this comes to Nova Scotia.

  23. So, why did you write this? It’s not funny, it’s not satire, it’s just, nothing. It’s a lie, the whole thing.

Once again, it’s not funny. You’re not funny. Don’t try to write “funny things” anymore.

Honestly, I’d rather watch an entire season of Caillou than read anything written by you, ever.

    Try harder.

Oh, by the way, no one likes a critic, or the truth, but I don’t care.

  24. Ugh. Im millenial and late 20s immigrant. This sense of entitlement disgusts me. Everyone! Rush to McDonald for a 1$ coffee until march.

  25. Wow really..I roof for a living in all kinds of different weather conditions …Snow rain it doesn’t matter. Do I get a tip …HELL NO!!! .here’s a tip ..if u don’t like being there for the pay u do get ..then get a different job . As it is up to the customer to give you a tip or not . So stop whining like a little baby and do your job like the rest of the world as we all have to work in conditions whether it’s cold out or something Else

  26. I’m no longer going to Tim Hortons. I don’t see why you should get a tip. We only wait in line for 10 – 15 minutes in drive thru anyway. I’ll go to McDonald’s and get a free coffee after 8 purchases.
I’m Canadian and I say FU Tim Hortons/Burger King.

  27. Is this real?? Seriously, forcing you to pay a tip. Tim Hortons image is going downhill quickly. Problem is their coffee is like a drug. A cheap mans cocaine. If you don’t like have a cold arm, get a job at Wal-mart. Christ who said you don’t need to put some effort into your job. If you don’t like it, then quit and live in your parents basement for the rest of your useless life. Pathetic little snots. And Tim Hortons… shame on you to allowing this action to even take place. You provide great customer service with a smile instead of an entitled smug look you may get your just reward. Why do I even waste my breath on Millennials. I know they are all not lazy whining SOB’S but grow a backbone and learn work ethics. May be their parents didn’t educate them what life is all about.

  28. I feel everyone one should boycott tummies coffee seems to go up everytime you turn around people should start going to McDonalds there coffee is better anyway.so long timmies

  29. Wow…..I can’t believe the amount of dumbasses on here that don’t realise this is a satire site. It’s not real dumbasses.

  30. This is a joke I work out side all year round 15 years I only make wage based pay never received a tip for working at a window doing nothing hut pushing fucking buttons of customers and the till and handing out a a fucking coffee ya’ll get over your entitled selfs this is a joke I won’t pay but retail price as mandated by federal law… Sorry but no federal law states mandatory tip payment and therefor I will subtract the tip from every pay and put it in the Tim hortons camp donation box fuck u entitled employees there’s people that were actually born in Canada who need it more

  31. This entitled generation needs a wakeup call. A large majority of workers work much harder and will never receive a tip for doing their job!

  32. So if I’m to understand what the snot nosed brat said…he expected a roughly 36% tip on a large coffee. Forgive me but what level of service is justifying that.

  33. Hard labour bitch please give the real hard working men and women back their change most of them put their bodies through hell for their minimum wage pay and get no tips and not even a thank you for what they do so appreciate that you get tips because with that kind of BS the CEO of Tim’s should fire the manager and employees and fix what’s going on or shut down its doors

  34. Dear Article author,
You deserve a Pulitzer award for this article. So many fired up over your writing. Awesome job!! Best laugh I’ve had in a long time. My sides actually hurt from laughter after reading the comments. Long live ‘The Manatee’.

  35. I have a fealing the idiot who wrote this article is a major holder of McDonalds stock. Seeing how they are going after the coffee market up here. ..hense this article…. funny thing is nobody at timmies knows of any coming markup due to tips

    1. OMG hahahaha the article is a satirical piece! Nobody at Tim’s knows about it because it isn’t true! Wow, how can you not get that??

  36. This is a freaking joke! I work in a refrigerated food plant and freeze my ass off on a production line while these Tim’s employees wanna bitch about having a cold arm! Come on, seriously!! I’m not tipping a teenie-bopper with a manicure that lives with mom and dad and spends her money on freaking highlights so she can be trendy in home room! Good luck Tim hortons employees you poor babies.

  37. This is a joke right? Lol you serve coffee. Do we tip soldiers for their duties? No. Do they ask for a tip? No. Quitchyabitchin!
