Atlantic Canada — I have watched in horror as my country rips itself apart over a silly semantic game regarding the parliamentary motion known as M-103. Racists, white supremacists, the alt-right and others I simply disagree with are blowing this out of proportion with extreme language.
M-103 is just a harmless private members’ motion, not a bill, that is not legally binding in anyway. But still, it needs to be passed as-is or I will just lose it. Legally, M-103 cannot limit free speech at all, so everyone just shut up about it!
Opponents are getting upset over one insignificant word. I won’t say it, because I suffer from islamalamaphobia: the fear of saying that word. The point is, this is just semantics. And we all know what semantics means. Even if you don’t, it sounds like something unpleasant, like gerunds or some other grammar thing from high school.
Furthermore, I would be remiss if I did not relate this debate to Trump. Before we focus too much on domestic issues within our control, let’s remember that we don’t like him, and as Canadians, there’s nothing we can do about it.
As our great prime minister said, it is not our role to lecture the U.S. on how they choose to oppress themselves. Or maybe he said that about China? Regardless, lecture, yuck. Another word I don’t like from high school.
In conclusion, I’ve lost interest in this issue. What’s Trump up to now?
