Fredericton — Earlier this week Tim Hortons, the staple Canadian coffee chain, announced they would be increasing the price of their hot beverages ordered through the drive-thru to include a mandatory tip, which staff have been keeping anyway.

The decision was made largely due to the massive number of complaints about drive-thru employees assuming any change from an order would be given to them, and the increase is also intended to help Tims employees recover from the debt owed to the store from substantial overspending on Timmies gift cards as presents.

“Sometimes people sit at the window expecting their change back, which obviously is super annoying and incredibly rude,” said high-schooler Abby Johnson, a part-time weekend employee at the Regent Street Tim Hortons.

“We put in like five or seven hours a weekend here with one of our arms being cold the whole time…we deserve the 80 cents when someone orders a large.”

Ryan Wooler, a fellow drive-thru employee working at different Fredericton-area franchise, shares the feeling of entitlement with Johnson.

“We are expected to stand there for a couple hours at a time and work…no one should be expected to suffer through that type of physical labour and not get tipped for it. Can you imagine the impact this will have on my body by the time I’m 30? We deserve to be compensated extra!”

The Manatee reached out to a local franchise owner, who prefers to remain anonymous, for comment on why only hot beverages will invoke the mandatory tip rule.

“We tend to only see coffee or latte orders in the drive-thru, where we stick the annoying little shits. The increase really is to cover the overtime of them calling in sick, tired, or Fortnite.”

Customers will see the increase take effect on Monday.

  1. Really??? Did they move up April Fools Day??? This can’t be a real story.
From someone who has spent over 35 years in the food service industry, I understand the necessity of tipping. I also understand it is something of a reward, not expected. In a full service establishment (where a server looks after you for 45 minutes to an hour. Doing multiple check backs and refills), yes, they deserve to be tipped. But through the drive thru? Where they spend 45 seconds taking your order through a speaker box. Another 30-45 seconds taking your money and passing you your drink, never to see you again? I don’t think so. TIPS , or gratuities are for when someone goes above and beyond. Merely doing the job you were hired to do knowing fully well what the job entailed, then no.

  2. It’s a false news story. Tim Hortons is not demanding tips and never will. Read the article and sift through the ridiculous claims. Someone’s just being a joker

  3. I didn’t know handing out tea could have that much of an impact on your body by 30. I’m a home renovator, I work in many kinds of conditions with being on my feet for a minimum of 6 hours to a maximum of 14. I’ll probably need crutches or a cane by the time I’m 30 then. They just want money for little work and walking around. Tips would be nice but only if it’s deserved. At times I don’t even get what I ordered and they have to fix it. Why tip if the service isn’t the greatest?

  4. Nobody tips me at my job and I work alot harder then you do …I work in all weather conditions no matter what…McDonald’s it is

  5. if you expect a tip you could at least make sure the orders are exactly as requested. And as an F.Y,I. I stand 8 hours a day 6 days a week and I don’t get nor do I expect one for being on my job.

  6. What a joke. These so Called “millennials” are honestly ruining this country and society. You now think you deserve 80 cents on a $2 coffee because your arm is cold. I can guarantee that 70% of those coffees are wrong in some way, either missing sugar or a completely different drink than the customer ordered. You also expect a tip before people try their beverage. Get a f-ing grip. You think people that work outside all winter have random drivers come by and tip them because their cold. No they don’t. They suck it up and do their job because their not useless people. It is honestly time to boycott this once good Canadian company. Get a different job if you don’t like ur arm getting cold. I’d say a Walmart greeter but there doors open a lot and you might get a chill.

    1. Wow I’ve never been more disappointed in your ignorance. This is a satire website it’s literally in the header.

  7. Aaannnnnnddddd that’s my last straw. Used to be able to get turkey sausage egg white belts and they stopped that, so I only got coffee there. What’s next were going to have to tip the sample people at Costco before we try a sample. Are tips going to be
    added to gas station employees.

  8. Nothing like destroying an ex canadian company. Keep it up and you won’t have to worry about getting tips. Canadians WILL go else where. Just ask sears and target.

  9. Are you kidding me . In the two weeks ever time I go thru the drive thru . And get on the road just to fine out that my whole order is not what I order. The whole order was all wrong. So what do we get in return nothing .

  10. Oh brother! I guess they figure it’s owed to them! I just recently had the experience of an employee at Tim’s telling me that I only had $4.00 left on my gift card only to find out that there actually was $14.00.To top it off he even asked me ( after I bought a coffee and muffin) if I wanted him to keep it , saying that there was only a small amount of change left!

  11. Wow your prolly in your 20s and think the world evolves around you if you think working at time hortons is hard then your in for a real eye opener. Yoh think your entitled to keep the change because you have to do your job god forbid. And if your worried about the damage its gunna do to your body by the time your 30 you might as well just give up on life you theres no saving you at this point with thoses type of views.

      1. Wow who is this notaboars. Real c-sucker sounds like another 20 something a- hole. Peoples comments really upset you . A ball less piece of crap who wouldnt say sh-t if face to face. If it’s TRUE Tim’s will lose a lot of customers . I only tip who I want to and that doesnt include bitchy employees at any buisness. Maybe they should try thanking there customers instead of being rude to them. Theres other options out there.

  12. I worked at timmies, and now I work at McDonald’s. Give. People. Their. Change.
If they don’t want it u keep it, that’s the understanding I got a timmies .

  13. lol wow…no tips are not mandatory they’re voluntary and only if you have given good enough service to deserve it. Entitled arses.

“Sometimes people sit at the window expecting their change back, which obviously is super annoying and incredibly rude,” said high-schooler Abby Johnson, a part-time weekend employee at the Regent Street Tim Hortons. <—this is extremely laughable and hilarious…no it is not rude, you should give the customer their change back and then if they feel you have given good enough service you might be given a tip…children these days…

  14. Well if that so.mi will not be buying coffee at tim Hortons anymore. …..the price already increase from 1.75 to 1.80. ..and yet u gonna add the tips on top of that.
    No way

  15. This is completely obsurd. The entitlement is so toxic and one-sided. People need to stop feeling as if the world owes it to them for everything they do. Lol 7 hours in a little window? Hard labour? Stop it. Grow up and handle your job as it is or find a new one. Disgusting.

  16. Check out on the internet the actual history of tipping. It was never meant to be extra money given to a person who is doing their job. In fact it had nothing ever to do with that. It had to do with the master feeling sorry for the ” slaves ” and giving a bit extra. It’s not expected that the customer subsidise the meager pay of the employee. The owners take that responsibility when they hire their employees!!

  17. Honestly 5-7 hours is a regular shift what are you complaining about… Be thankful you have a job!! I work in a kitchen restaurant 9am to 12:30am double shifts.. And I Do not get tips nor does any of our kitchen staff, some work minimum wage and we work in front of hot ovens and grills .. Extreme heat conditions… No complaints .. We need to be thankful we have jobs and the minimum wage has increased to our advantage. Be thankful and if WE don’t like OUR job move on to something that makes you happy to go to work everyday. Canada gives us ample resources to learn a trade / career. If the job posting didn’t guarantee tips from Every sale as part of the job… We shouldn’t be expecting it. Furthermore, a tip should be decided by the customer… How was the service… If we have to wait 8 minutes for a toasted bagel order that is delivered incorrectly… We SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO CHOOSE THE TIP AMOUNT. Just my opinion… BE PROUD AND GRATEFUL TO BE A WORKING CANADIAN. PEACE MY HARD WORKING FRIENDS!!

  18. How they thinking of tip as usually they mess up orders, and when you pass from window and you sip and realize order is not as per your requirements or its something is missing so I never go back or call them to make complain so how they expecting they getting tip for nothing .or standing few hours and just pouring water or mixing tea bags not a hardship.they are their by their own choice if regret f change your job.

    1. Given that your comment is completely illegible I’m not surprised you didn’t realize this post was satire.

  19. Just lost my coffee order. Why do we have to pay for the company’s over spending or be forced to tip. I used to work at a supermarket 40 hours a week and never got tips, making medium wage of $9. an hour.

  20. You work 5 or 7 hours in a weekend and think you are entitled, you are in for a rude awakening when you get into the really world, and if working at Timmie’s is devastating you cause you have to get cold give your head a shake, word of advise don’t ASSUME anything we all have to earn our way in life, its not handed on a silver platter, you have no clue what work is, don’t cut your education short cause you obviously have not been educated in life itself and need to be

    1. You need to educate yourself on what satire is. You need to educate yourself on recognizing things that aren’t true. You need to educate yourself on READING THE WEBSITE HEADER WHERE IT SAYS THIS IS ALL SATIRE.

      1. You need to shut up about how this website is a satire !!! Do you really need to tell everyone on every comment how stupid they are and “this is a satire website” your stupid and annoying!! They are just voicing their true feeling on a post..! Real or not!!!
You are just an annoying jerk!!!!

        1. And Notaboars is just voicing their true feelings on your posted comment. As am I. If you don’t want people to be able to respond to your ignorance then I suggest not waving it around in a public forum.

As for you, Notaboars… You’re doing God’s work, stranger. 10/10. Been cracking up, scrolling through the comments. Faith in humanity very slightly restored. :’)

  21. This has to be satire. Even the dumbest person reading this has to see the “quotes” are a joke.

I sure hope it’s satire or RBI will lose a lot of business.

  22. I will not be forced to give a tip, epecially at a drive through widow. I will just order from somewhere else. It is terrible that these young kids have being so spoiled by their parents that now they think that they are owned something in life. That is so ridiculous!

    1. What is terrible is that you’re so dumb you don’t realize this is satire. You’re generation is so stupid.

      1. *your

(Sorry. Had to. It’s a reflex. I’m working on it. But I do know satire when I see it, so there is that.)

  23. What stupidity am I reading? Upset about standing around, digging your nose for 5 hours and expecting a bloody tip? Here’s a tip for you, real life us going to be a whole lot worse. But good on you for having a job. Most teenagers expect money to fall from the sky or parents pocket.

  24. The irony here is that millennials are actually aware that this is a satirical publication. It is joke. The Manatee is like “The Onion”, or “The Beaverton” It’s not real. Lol C’mon!!

  25. I only leave a tip if the service is good , you people choose the job you wanted so be it you gotta stand there for hours , my job is way harder on body but I don’t whine when I don’t get a tip . Tim Hortons in Brampton are all bad and most drive thru staff are rude and takes way to long get a coffee .

  26. Is this a joke Tims ? Seriously millennials… Tips are earned… Not handed on a silver platter! I guess I should have demanded tips way back in my young days when I delivered the local newspapers in the Rain and Snow!! I didn’t…Sorry . I guess I only leaned the invaluable skills of hard work with no added bonus of self entitlement!!

  27. Wow talk about entitled. Wait until they get out in the real world. You are not entitled to a 60 percent tip because you had to stand for two hours. Wake up.

  28. I used to work for Tim Horton’s. Sorry, but your wage is your wage. Tips are because the customer recognized you deserve it. I’m not paying someone a mandatory tip for getting my order wrong, talking to their buddy beside them, dismissing me with not even a “good day”. Looks like I say good bye to Tim Horton’s after over 20 years of supporting them.

  29. I don’t agree with a mandatory tip. Tips are given because the job you do at customer service, if you suck at your job and your rude to customer’s why do you deserve anything extra? That makes zero sense!

  30. Tim hortons coffee tastes like old mop water, has poor customer service and product and yet they keep raising their prices?!
I switched to McDonald’s years ago and haven’t looked back.

  31. The fact that someone thinks its annoying and rude to except the money they worked for to be returned to them is in itself ignorant, maybe an attitude adjustment would bring you more tips,no one owes you for doing what you already get paid to do.

  32. Tim Horton prices have been raising quite a lot in the past little while. The company is getting greedy beyond belief. We work hard for the little money we earn. Another example of corporations trying to get every last nickel in our pocket. God forbid we try to save for a future!

  33. This cant be real. We all work few of us tipped for it go fuck yourselfs seriously I had a guy try to keep all my.change for a 5 dollar bill on one xlarge coffee this shits insane.
