Fredericton — Earlier this week Tim Hortons, the staple Canadian coffee chain, announced they would be increasing the price of their hot beverages ordered through the drive-thru to include a mandatory tip, which staff have been keeping anyway.

The decision was made largely due to the massive number of complaints about drive-thru employees assuming any change from an order would be given to them, and the increase is also intended to help Tims employees recover from the debt owed to the store from substantial overspending on Timmies gift cards as presents.

“Sometimes people sit at the window expecting their change back, which obviously is super annoying and incredibly rude,” said high-schooler Abby Johnson, a part-time weekend employee at the Regent Street Tim Hortons.

“We put in like five or seven hours a weekend here with one of our arms being cold the whole time…we deserve the 80 cents when someone orders a large.”

Ryan Wooler, a fellow drive-thru employee working at different Fredericton-area franchise, shares the feeling of entitlement with Johnson.

“We are expected to stand there for a couple hours at a time and work…no one should be expected to suffer through that type of physical labour and not get tipped for it. Can you imagine the impact this will have on my body by the time I’m 30? We deserve to be compensated extra!”

The Manatee reached out to a local franchise owner, who prefers to remain anonymous, for comment on why only hot beverages will invoke the mandatory tip rule.

“We tend to only see coffee or latte orders in the drive-thru, where we stick the annoying little shits. The increase really is to cover the overtime of them calling in sick, tired, or Fortnite.”

Customers will see the increase take effect on Monday.

  1. They get paid minimum wage plus benefits just like anyone else bullshit I wont buy coffee anymore if that’s the case

    1. Benifits?? HA!! That would be awesome!! Oh, and it would be even more awesome if I got my breaks I’m legally entitled to!

  2. Officially this is the last straw. I am never going to Tim Horton’s. There are so many other choices and even if it’s a 5min further, still worth the distance. I’d rather get up earlier than support that.

    1. …than support something that’s not actually happening? You are taking your business elsewhere based on a satire site instead of actually checking to see if this is real? Yikes

  3. To the person wanting to keep my change after i have worked a full time job that i do not get tipped for as well as working outside ….

    Give us our correct order
Get yourself a full time job
If you don’t want want a cold arm look for another job ….

When i order 2 – 4 cheese bagels with sausage and chedder cheese and i get home and all i have is 2 bagels with nothing on it and you want a %&*$#@ tip
When i order steak wraps between 10 and 11 am and you don’t have any …. you want a %^$#@ tip
When i order anything and it is always wrong but you tell me that’s what i ordered you want a ^&*%$ tip

  4. This is a joke. I worked at Tim Hortons in northern Ontario for 6 years. Yeah is sucked working drive thru in -30 weather but I would NEVER expect a tip from a costumer.

  5. ?a tip is something you want to give not what is expected and there are a lot of public jobs that don’t get tips like emergency workers, nurses, crossing guards that stand in the rain ,snow, sleet for our kids and they don’t have there hands out

  6. There’s a lot harder jobs out there than serving coffee donuts and sandwiches you got to be kidding me try shoveling all night 30 below weather or working on the machines and freezing cold weather try siding are fixing houses doing roofs in this kind of weather then maybe you deserve something like that Tim Hortons is an easier job than all them jobs while you’re out in the weather like that and it says what would love do to our bodies on my 30 what about the people that are that age working these jobs out in the weather and the elements that sounds like these people need to grow up and quit being a baby about their job

  7. These comments do not disappoint. This is why nobody wants to stay in NB, you idiots believe everything on Fabebook ???

  8. I don’t even go to Tim Hortons anymore .McDonald’s coffee is better by far and I can get an extra large with a muffin for $2.60. I once had 4 extra large with muffins at Tim Horton’s . Many times they were made wrong or they overcharged me for the muffin . I always tipped them until one day I had enough . So now no more Tim’s for me .

  9. Goodbye Tim Hortons. I choose when and who to tip! Started going to McDonalds for coffee now they will have our households coffee money! What a society of entitlement. Have worked hard for my money not always under pleasant conditions no tip expected! I can not get over the nerve of your company!

    1. It’s not the nerve of the company. This story has NOTHING to do with Tim Hortons or its employees. It was written on The Manatee. A satire website. You know, humour. Laughs. Teasing. You get the picture. Now, don’t you feel dumb?

      1. As a matter of fact I do feel dumb now, however do not see the humor in this website nor did many of my peers! ! Had this been written at a different time we would of seen the humor! In this day and age of self everything it was easy to believe!

  10. Ridiculous !!! I’ve been a server for 34 yrs l take pride serving customers. When l earn a tip its the customers choice. I dont expect them. If you choose employment somewhere you do what the job your asked. If you dont like it or can’t do it. Find a different job ?. this announcement has put another negative thought of tim hortons in my mind. You can be sure l ll be getting my “80” or whatever change is mine from a purchase. Any employees who thinks as Abby & Ryan do need more training. Tim hortons CEO wake up

  11. TIPS =TO INSURE PROPER SERVICE ….tell that to those high school children who have no idea of the value of money or the value of having to work hard for that money !!!!!!

    1. Not trying to pick a fight but you know that many students do work hard?? Some are working a job and getting their education at the same time, and though that may not seem hard in your eyes, each experiences life differently. They are still working hard and probably many are trying to get money for higher education, so they do understand the value of money. Also, this is satire, just so you know. This is not even real, it is a joke and nothing more.

  12. I wait for my change..even if it’s 5cents. The cost is the cost. You only tip dine in places where servers make less than minimum wage. Suck on that, Snowflakes!

  13. I could actually agree to give a tip , if they actually get my order right. Because they can only handle making one coffee per order, anything else is 50/50 chance they will get it right.

  14. Prices are to high as is for coffee. We as customers wait in a line at the drive thru as is and waste our time and gas. We should get a cheaper price for our orders instead of having to tip for coffe that is always wrong. If this happens then everyone should boycott timmies

  15. I used to work at Target while it was in Canada. I worked harder than a drive-thru coffee (and yes, been there done that at Starbucks). While I worked at Target, I worked 7.5 hour shifts. I had to clean up the messes made by women who showed no respect…I had just folded 3 table of clothes as a woman came in right behind me messing up everything I had just folded. I had to clean up the change rooms, because you couldn’t be bothered to bring out what you took in, leaving clothing inside out and on the floor. I had to go through the winter coats, put them back on the hangers because you were to lazy to put them back on the hangers and zip them back up. I had to keep myouth shut while you were busy shopping so you let you kids run around, run throuhhclithing racks and knocking stuff down and running into other customers…I asked them to please stop running, but they would ignore me. I had to repackage items because you ripped the package open and left things laying all over the floor. Did I get tips….NO. Did I expect tips….NO. So Tim Hortons, stop being so damn entitled. You don’t like it, get a different job

  16. Get a grip on reality you snot nosed buggers…You parents should boot you out of the house so you’ll have to fend for yourselves in the real world…Tell me have you ever tipped a construction work as you drove by for working there 12-15 hours a day…have you ever tipped your teacher for trying to teach you??? No you haven’t because your so extremely selfish, self entitled, and completely nuts if you think anyone owes you a tip of any kind…Your pay is already too much for the pitiful job you do each day…Get a job that requires you to do actual labor, then ask for a tip!!! Snowflakes that’s what ya’ll are!!!

    1. My goodness, it’s you who should get a grip on reality, as this is SATIRE. This is not even happening so maybe calm down a little??

  17. But other fast food workers don’t get tips like mcdicks or burger king. What makes these tummies employees so entitled? I’ll tip when the coffee is consistent & the service is good. Timmies near my place is a joke of an establishment.

  18. Put a glove on buttercup!!! If tim hortons keeps going like this and raisen cost every couple months mcdonlds coffee is the old tim hortons coffee and there cost dont change and there employees dont bitch like the softy tim hortons hires

  19. This is ridicilious, guess Timmys is going to loose a lot of customers. If I wanna tip it should be up to me not the store to tell me I have to. We are already paying for the service if we buy from Timmys and employees know when they take a position with them that serving in Drive Thru is part of the job.

  20. You realize most those people work outside in this cold all day everyday and have for years building warm places for you to sleep or work where you only have to “stick an arm out the window” you realize they have drive thru coats for that right? With the franchise name on them I use to be that guy in a drive thru and I never thought I was entitled to a fucking tip cause “think of the things it’s gonna do to my body” now I’m the guy out in the cold all day everyday building your warm ass houses for you to wake up drove in your warm vehicle to your cushy cozy drive thru job. This is an absolute joke, and you wonder why more people go to McDonald’s or macs milk or 7/11

  21. This is absolutely ridiculous!!!!!
    I can’t stand this generation of worker’s!!!
Get a life!!! Do your job, get paid, and go back into work the next day to do it all over again!!
Let me welcome you to into the REAL WORLD!!!!
I can’t imagine what your life will be like when you have families!!
Your children won’t tip you after you wipe their ass, I can assure you that!!!!
STOP COMPLAINING, AND WEAR A LONG SLEEVE SHIRT!!!

    1. This is satire…..Don’t take this website so seriously and honestly, almost everyone is entitled in this day and age so…yeah…Not just this generation.

  22. This is rediculous. The people they’ve chosen to interview don’t reflect the feelings of the majority of Tims employees. I work at Tims and no one in my store ever assumes that the change is a tip. I’ve handed so many nickels and dimes back to customers and never once complained about it. And yes sometimes it sucks to have your arm out the window for hours at -40°C but that’s part of the job. If they think that putting in place a mandatory tip will solve everything they are completely wrong. Firstly I’d be suprised if that money ever made it to the employees and secondly it’s the employees who will have to deal with customer complaints. As for it only being hot drinks affected, there is no justification for that. Everything on the menu can and is ordered through drive-thru including ice caps, smoothies, salads, wraps and grilled-cheese and as many as desired. Not much research or thought has been placed here.

  23. I’m sorry but to my knowledge the staff at Tim Hortons across all of Canada are not able to accept tips. Besides, if this is a possibility, perhaps there should be a tip option available upon payment for those staff who deserve it. Tim Hortons has always been and always will be a coffee supply location as opposed to a full serve restaurant. The implication that a “mandatory tip” will be included in the price upon purchase is, in my opinion, illegal. It’s not illegal but it should be. Also, staff at most Tim Hortons are not all full time workers so no, unfortunately, not all employees at Tim Hortons have enough hours to be able to have benefits. If this is a concern to those employed at Tim Hortons they should consider another option for employment. Students employed also should consider employment supplements to increase their income above their working income. Implying that customers should “have to” pay more for a quick coffee before work and implying that they are “lazy” only dictates the outlying problems with the millennial “working” population degrading others who want to work. If you don’t like your job, and you think that you know everything, get off your ass, get a better job and see what it’s like to work for a living.

  24. Maybe when Tim Horton’s gets cups and lids that don’t leak scalding hot coffee all over my hands, I’ll consider a tip. And I’m sorry, I did Timmies for 5 years, how hard is it to push the hot chocolate button and make sure the spout isn’t clogged? Tired of getting hot water with a slight chocolate flavour. Check yourself before you ask for more
    money.

  25. boycott tim hortons after a day of no sales they will change it back tim hortons is not canadian owned anymore so fuck them

  26. The coffee is crap anyway! Haven’t seen much if my business since the coffee and prices and the fact that it’s not Canadian anymore. Not getting my money.

    1. So true! I could tell pretty quickly that this was not real! They also have a disclaimer at the bottom of the page, but apparently people can’t see that….lol

  27. I would like to know who is FORCING you to work at Tim Hortons…and as for physical labor , if you think that is it…you have another thing coming when you grow up….the guy who is going through the drive through just worked a 12 hour shift at a labors job and has earned every dime of what he was paid why should he give it away he paid for his coffee he paid for his donut….and Tims pays you to give it to him all is fair

  28. How about NO! They can’t even make my simple “triple triple” right so why the hell would I support them to continue making my orders wrong?

  29. I worked at Tim Hortons for many years. Tips are earned and not an automatic given. It is up to the customer if they want to tip you. Drive thru they also provide jackets to stay warm, they rotate the employees so they are not at the window all the time.

  30. K so if they want tips will their wage go down like waitress/waiters. And. Mabey make my coffee right and I’ll think about tipping my money that I also worked for. Teenagers come into my restaurant and buy there meal…. Look straight at the tip jar and put their change back in there pocket. So wtf are they complaining about. I also have to say it’s rude to expect anything. Fawken millennials always have their hand out..

  31. All these people take these poor paying jobs that are given to them. There must have been a complaint on waged, and instead of giving them a raise. They expect everyone else to give them that pay bump, this doesn’t surprise me, not in the least.

  32. just to let all of you know, especially those who went off the handle, this is not real. This was a fantastically written store that had so many people fooled, you were willing to go to McDonalds for your coffee. to Brent Munn, congratulation on a story well written.

  33. Fuckin whiney little bitches , try working outside all day or night , i do snow removal and up 20-30hours or more at a time , they work in a damn coffee shop what kind of labour is that fuckin idiots , you want better pay get a better fuckin job , oh no your arms out the window…… dress warmer and quit your fuckin bitching , over entitled cock suckers

  34. I hope the Manatee writers have a deal where the more irate comments they can garner from their satirical article, the more money they get. This is brilliant! Congratulations!

  35. What kinda Bulls#!t is this. I work 9+ hrs a day outside has a construction worker, no matter the weather! Who the fck is gonna tip me? Dont like your job quit!

  36. This is BS they get paid more than me to make coffee and the want a tip?? How about getting the orders right, faster service and fresher food first then we will talk

  37. I love reading these comments just for the people who don’t get that this is a satire article. Seriously people, get the stick out your a** and laugh a little instead of getting irate over a damn joke.

    1. I could tell it wasnt a real article right away. People arent very bright, so it’s fun to wind them up and watch them go.

  38. If you dont like your job or feel your employer is not paying you enough for your duties then quit. Dont complain about other people not giving you their hard earned money because you copped out and picked a job your not happy with how much you make.

    1. I’m a mom who worked in a CASKET companny where we work verry hard for what we are payed ,my youngest son was working in a TIM and he was making more than me so stop with the bull s….!!

  39. I have to laugh at them saying it’s such hard physical labor. ITS TIM HORTONS! If you don’t like the aspects of your job, CHANGE JOBS. Don’t expect the customer to pay extra for YOUR inconvenience. And if the company thinks they deserve more money then the COMPANY should pay it!!!

    1. I do agree that the idea of this is crazy but it really is hard physically. Burns, cuts, standing in a drive through window when it’s -38 for 8 hours

      1. Then you should get a soft job like .paving rds , I work holding a shovel 12 hrs a day in all kinds of weather and conditions I think I should get extra compensation for making sure your rds are good so you can goto your Tim’s. Lmao!!

    2. i do agree with you amanda, the client are free to let tip or not. that’s rude of the tim horton, well i will have to get my coffee at somewhere else or do it at home

    3. Then why don’t you go an see for your god damn self! I’ve worked there for 8 years doing everything down to baking and working the front before switching jobs an it is a hard working job especially with hot beverages around you, possibly burning yourself, standing at the window for 8 hours in the freezing cold even the summer it gets bad with all the hot machines, or even other medical problems with having carpal tunnel or tennis elbow which I got from working there so long by pouring all you ungrateful ignorant people your coffee you so desperately need to get you through the day! You have to deal with shit customers probably one like yourself it seems! Thinking we don’t deserve the same respect or even a small tip like you would at any other place! Especially if you want friendly accurate service!
