‘Thank God we live in Canada,’ tweets student standing in front of closed Clinic 554

Fredericton — Roe v. Wade was officially overturned by the U.S. Supreme Court this morning, stripping women of their right to bodily autonomy across the country. Since the ruling, many Canadians have been quick to point out on social media that they do not agree with the decision.

“Thank God we live in Canada,” tweeted 20-year-old St. Thomas student Gloria Parker. “I can’t imagine living in a country that doesn’t care about women’s health.”

The tweet was accompanied by a photo of Parker standing in front of Clinic 554.

Clinic 544, the former Morgentaler Clinic, was a woman’s health facility intended to provide safe, accessible medical care, including abortions. In 2019, it was announced that the clinic would be put up for sale due to a lack of funding from the province, making New Brunswick the only province to not fund surgical abortions outside hospitals.

While the clinic is no longer able to provide adequate care, it does provide a great backdrop for selfies.

“It’s disgusting what the Supreme Court is doing,” Parker told The Manatee. “What I don’t get is why Biden doesn’t veto it.”

While her morale might be down, her engagement is up. One tweet, featuring an image of a coat hanger and a sad face emoji received more than 85 likes in under 20 minutes.

However, before she was about to retweet a video depicting Ruth Bader Ginsberg as Thor crushing the Supreme Court with her hammer, Parker saw that the tweet did not send. Checking her phone’s settings, she discovered that she had run out of mobile data.

“Doesn’t this place have Wi-Fi?” she asked, raising her phone towards the clinic. “God, it’s basically a human right at this point.”
